It is important that herders are able to regularly assess the condition of their contracted grazing areas and monitor changes over time.
A simplified assessment methodology was demonstrated to herders. The method:
Does not require specialized equipment;
Enables rapid data collection from multiple locations under short time;
Is simple to process and interpret.
The participating herders who are resting 9000 ha summer and fall rangelands during the summer season across the Tsagaan Gol and Mandliin Khuremt areas showed strong interest in the methodology and responded positively to its application.
One of the key strengths of the approach is that it helps explain, based on field evidence, why livestock movement is necessary and how grazing management impacts can be defined by the observed changes in rangeland health.
