In order to mitigate the impacts of global climate change, protect and increase forest and water resources, and maintain ecological balance, the national campaign “Billion Trees” has been launched to raise public awareness about the importance of planting, growing, and caring for trees.
Previously, National Tree Planting Days were observed on the second Saturday of May and September each year. However, under Presidential Decree No. 44 issued this year, the second Saturday and Sunday of May and September have been declared as National Billion Trees Planting Days. This change is expected to encourage broader public participation in planting and caring for trees and shrubs.
The Billion Trees National Movement is organized around three main objectives: restoring degraded forests, establishing protective greenbelts against desertification, land degradation, and soil erosion, and developing green spaces in urban areas.
In previous years, nationwide campaigns have included: “Right Tree – Right Care” in 2021, “Let’s Create Nature” in 2022, “Plant Trees, Create Nature” in 2023, and in 2024, “Let’s All Plant Trees” and “Golden Autumn – Tree Planting Season.” This year, the campaign emphasizes planting, caring for, and growing trees within household yards under the slogan “The Closest Place to Plant a Tree is Your Yard,” with information and outreach being delivered to the public.
Since the launch of the national movement (excluding this spring’s planting), around 100 million trees have been planted and grown nationwide. An assessment of trees planted last year showed a growth survival rate of 80–85%.
Before the campaign began, Mongolia’s forest cover accounted for 7.9% of the country’s total territory. Since then, forest cover has increased to 13,217.2 thousand hectares, or 8.45% of the territory, demonstrating positive results.
Therefore, the Environmental Police Department is calling on citizens and organizations to actively participate in this initiative and plant trees in their yards.
